OVERVIEW

With research encompassing biomaterials, applied mechanics, thermal-fluid systems, dynamics and control systems, energy and transportation, and much more, KU mechanical engineering faculty are renowned global leaders in basic and applied science. Graduate students tackle challenges alongside faculty and research partners that serve society and the world. The department’s excellent facilities include instrumentation and testing laboratories, a makerspace, an extensive machine shop as well as numerous faculty-led research labs.

WORLD-CLASS RESEARCH

Multidisciplinary research groups work in labs devoted to batteries and fuel cells, materials and biomaterials, biomechanics, computational mechanics, control systems, heat transfer, mechanical design, medical diagnostics, membrane technology, machine learning, transportation infrastructure and photoacoustic imaging. Graduate students have the opportunity to work alongside innovative faculty and start-up companies who create breakthroughs that develop technology to enhance and improve our world.

Institute for Bioengineering Research (IBER)

The Institute for Bioengineering Research provides a research, teaching and scholarly environment that promotes creativity while catalyzing the collaborations that will solve problems impacting societal health and well-being. IBER blends team-oriented science with independent-investigator efforts to foster fundamental discoveries and technological developments that reach beyond the capacity of an individual researcher.

Hill Engineering Research & Development Center

The Hill Engineering Research & Development Center on KU’s West Campus is home to cutting-edge interdisciplinary research focused on the challenges of a sustainable approach to automobiles and energy infrastructure. Students approach projects related to education, energy, environment, economics and ethics with a lens for people, the planet and prosperity.
