Biography

Dr. Deng is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the director of the Design Intelligence Laboratory. He received his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2016. Before joining the University of Kansas in 2024, he was a research associate at Northwestern University (2023-2024), a postdoctoral fellow at the University of California Irvine (2020-2022), and a research engineer in the design optimization team of MSC Nastran (2016-2019). His research vision is to develop data-driven physics-informed design intelligence for advanced material-structure systems by leveraging machine learning, data science, and computational mechanics. He has authored numerous peer-reviewed journal and conference articles as well as licensed patents.

Research

Dr. Deng is broadly interested in interdisciplinary topics at the frontiers of design automation, including design for advanced manufacturing, design of material systems, structural design optimization, data-driven design, and mechanics-based design.
